The Indiegogo team is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Michael Mahal—a prolific filmmaker, a relentless creator, and a cornerstone of the independent film crowdfunding community.
Michael was more than just a successful campaigner. He was a visionary who helped redefine what’s possible when filmmakers connect directly with their audiences. Over the years, he raised more than $4 million across 37 campaigns on Indiegogo, bringing to life genre-defying films that were equal parts ambitious and scrappy, heartfelt and high-octane. His most recent campaign, The Apex Predators Club, had just surpassed the $200,000 milestone—a moment he celebrated with joy in his final message to us. Another film Alien Horde was in its finishing stages.
Alongside his brother Sonny, Michael created Mahal Empire Productions and invited fans, contributors, and aspiring filmmakers and actors to be part of the process—offering perks that made everyone a stakeholder in the story. His success wasn’t just measured in funds raised or movies made, but in the way he built a community around his work. He showed what it means to bring people in, to share the dream, and to deliver on it.
The grief felt throughout the indie film community is profound. But so too is the legacy Michael leaves behind.
Filmmakers from around the world studied his campaigns. They learned from his updates, his energy, his transparency. For many, he was an unofficial mentor—teaching by example, inspiring confidence, and proving that independent film doesn’t have to mean going it alone.
One filmmaker recently captured this beautifully in a tribute titled “Michael Mahal: The Indie Film Hustling Crowdfunding King”, writing:
Michael proved that dreams don’t need permission — they need persistence.

We couldn’t agree more.
Michael’s projects didn’t rely on studio backing or celebrity names. They were powered by belief, hustle, and heart. And they will continue to inspire filmmakers who are just starting their journeys—those who are looking to make their mark outside the traditional systems and tell the stories that matter most to them.
We send our love and condolences to Michael’s family, especially to Sonny, and to everyone who had the honor of working alongside him. As the teams behind The Apex Predators Club and Alien Horde continue on, we stand with them—and with the entire community he helped build.
Michael Mahal wasn’t just a filmmaker. He was a force. And his impact will live on in every story told boldly, funded bravely, and brought to life through the power of community.
Rest in peace, Michael.
