Burn Baby Burn: Burning Man Festival 2011

Far, far away in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, thousands descend to form Black Rock City, one of the world’s most unusual and progressive cultural festivals to date.  Deemed a city more than a festival, Burning Man can wow, frighten, excite and certainly overwhelm first timers, but what’s clear is, you’ll never forget being there.  Starting out on a small beach in San Francisco it has grown to over 48,000 people in the past ten years.  A sustainable and dedicated community show up each year to a festival that boasts its own gazettearts foundation, it’s own solar summit,  a volunteer outreach collective, a café, radio station and a recycling center.

It’s mission statement cites, ‘The touchstone of value in our culture will always be immediacy: experience before theory, moral relationships before politics, survival before services, roles before jobs, embodied ritual before symbolism, work before vested interest, participant support before sponsorship. Finally, in order to accomplish these ends, Burning Man must endure as a self-supporting enterprise that is capable of sustaining the lives of those who dedicate themselves to its work. From this devotion spring those duties that we owe to one another. We will always burn the Man. ‘

In the run up to Burning Man this weekend, we’ve rounded up the IndieGoGo, all geared towards making it the best experience ever!

ART Temple of Transition
This Fractured Atlas campaign wanted to create the Temple of Transition, a 120’ high and 220’ wide temple where festival goers can leave messages and totems to their loved ones.  At the end of Burning Man the Temple will be burnt to signify the banishing of all those emotions.

ART The Tree of Heaven
CORE (Circle of Regional Effigies) is a project inviting people from around the world to submit effigies which represent their culture, an installation that aims to be the biggest burn in the festival’s 25 year history.

COMMUNITY Bubble and Bass
A not-for-profit artistic collective wanted to create a space at Burning man to showcase their photography project, sound and music events and circus arts. Check it out whilst you're there!

FOOD Bring Frozen Bliss to Burning Man
Wish there was vegan ice cream at Black Rock Desert? Instead of sweating and resisting that craving, this ice cream truck promises to deliver gallons of the stuff right to your palate.

FOOD Black Rock City Farmers Market
It seems near impossible to imagine that fresh farm produce can be available smack bang in the middle of a blanket of hot desert.  After all the excitement of sensory overload, your body still needs fruits and veggies – and now its happening!
