Forests are home to 80 percent of the world’s terrestrial species of plants, animals, and insects. And 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihood, including 70 million indigenous people. Forests supply water, mitigate climate change, and are essential for sustainable food production. Yet deforestation and forest degradation continue at alarming rates. Between 2015 and 2020, the rate of deforestation was estimated at 10 million hectares per year. And the area of primary forest worldwide has decreased by over 80 million hectares since 1990.
This month, Indiegogo donated $6,800 to support reforestation efforts to help make our planet a little greener, literally. The planet wouldn’t be able to survive without our forests, which is why we are excited to choose two incredible organizations dedicated to deforestation as part of our ongoing promise to support causes that matter to the Indiegogo community.
We want to thank the Indiegogo community for allowing us to make a difference and support causes that help the greater good. Last year, Indiegogo launched Tips for Indiegogo, a feature that allows backers to add a small additional donation to their campaign contributions. Indiegogo donates a portion of the money raised from Tips to important causes that need immediate attention. Earlier this year, Indiegogo donated $17,000 to the Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus, and we also donated 100% of the revenue raised from our March 15, 2021 newsletter to Stop AAPI Hate.
Since our inception, helping the planet has been a prime concern for Indiegogo backers and campaigners. Hundreds of ideas that aim to protect the planet have found their home on Indiegogo’s platform, and reforestation efforts are crucial to keeping our planet habitable. On September 15, 2021, we donated a total of $6,800 to the following 2 organizations to support reforestation:
One Tree Planted, a non-profit organization focused on global reforestation. Their mission is to make it simple for anyone to help the environment by planting trees. Indiegogo’s donation of $1,800 will be put into the reforestation efforts in North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Pacific.
American Forest Foundation, a non-profit organization that works on-the-ground with families, teachers, and elected officials to promote stewardship and protect the forest heritage of the United States. Indiegogo’s donation of $5K will help deliver meaningful conservation impact through the empowerment of family forest landowners.
