Since Indiegogo was founded in 2008, we’ve seen projects from essentially every category imaginable, from cutting-edge technology to the world’s first crowdfunded baby. No matter how creative and diverse the Indiegogo community gets, one category that is firmly embedded in our roots is film. Nearly 60,000 independent filmmakers have used our platform as a way to raise funds, validate their ideas and bring their dreams to the big screen. We’re proud to have been a part of so many inspiring stories. Here are just a few of many highlights.
Miles Ahead
Award-winning actor Don Cheadle made his directorial debut with Miles Ahead, a feature film about legendary jazz musician Miles Davis. He began crafting his vision for this film nearly eight years ago and turned to Indiegogo to raise funds to produce the film independently of any major studios. Miles Ahead raised nearly $350,000 on Indiegogo in 2014 and premiered in the coveted closing slot at the New York Film Festival in 2015. Miles Ahead is also screening at Sundance Film Festival and will be released by Sony Pictures Classics in 2016.
Con Man
Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion, costars of cult classic Firefly, raised $3.2 million on Indiegogo for their new sci-fi digital series Con Man, smashing their original goal by 735%. With nearly 50,000 backers, Con Man was brought to life thanks to the loyal fan community. The series was released exclusively on Vimeo On Demand in September 2015 and the first season is available to rent.
Endless Poetry
Acclaimed Chilean auteur and El Topo director Alejando Jodrowsky found a home for his new film Endless Poetry. The campaign is in Indiegogo InDemand and has already raised more than $236,000 to create this tale of poetic experimentation. The film is close to completing post-production and will make its festival premiere in 2016.
Super Troopers 2
When Super Troopers came out in 2001, the Broken Lizard crew became an instant cult classic. Throughout the years, the comedy troupe was repeatedly asked when a sequel could be expected, and in 2015 they launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise funds for production. The Super Troopers 2 campaign raised a record-breaking $4.5 million in 2015. The film recently started production and will wrap principal photography in early 2016.
Hardcore
Russian filmmaker Ilya Naishuller created a short, action-packed film in a unique POV style that left viewers wanting more. And thus, Hardcore was born: the first- ever action POV feature film. The campaign raised more than $254,000 and was well received by audiences during its premiere at Toronto International Film Festival 2015. Hardcore was picked up by distributor STX and will be released in 2016 under the title Hardcore Henry.
Whether you’ve been working on your idea for years or you have a new creative vision you want to bring to life, these Indiegogo success stories are just a few of the highlights from the past couple years. We can’t wait to see what 2016 brings.
